About this product

The Brandenburg was a style of Men's Great Coat inspired by Eastern styles. For a time — the 1670s-1710s, or Golden Age of Piracy — the Brandenburg displaced the ubiquitous cloak’s popularity.

In the 1670s, German soldiers from the town of Brandenburg began wearing a roomy, A-line coat made from the wool of their homeland. This coat revealed Eastern origins by its cut and decoration. Cut without shoulder seams and with sleeves in one piece with the body, not surprisingly this garment resembled the braid-covered coats of the Poles and Russians. Matter of fact, the word "Brandenburg” came to describe both the coat itself and its typical decorative frogging.

Fits chests 34" to 54" and waists 28"to 50". All sizes in one envelope.

Also included are assembly instructions, embellishment suggestions, and the extensive historical notes you've come to expect from Reconstructing History.

Suggested Fabrics: coat weight wool; lightweight silk or linen for lining

Notions: thread, buttons, braid and passementerie trim to taste

Yardage Requirements: 5 yds at least 45" wide
